Breastfeeding clothes can be quite expensive if bought at a “mom store,” so here are a few things you can look for to have a great breastfeeding wardrobe without investing a huge amount of money.

Brass

Just because your breasts change and take on a sometimes overwhelming new responsibility doesn’t mean they should receive less support. Having enough bras, the right size, with enough support and the ability to breastfeed is ideal. Even if you don’t know whether you’ll be breastfeeding for six weeks or three years, investing in those bras and wardrobe is critical to your breastfeeding success. Your bras are the most important part because if you can’t get your boobs out of your bra, it doesn’t matter if you can get them out of your shirt. The key to this whole wardrobe is making those boobs easier to access! By the end of this article you will know all my tricks.

I bought six “breastfeeding” bras. The first 4 I bought at Target for 9.99 each and they were a sporty-looking fabric bra with clips that attach the cups to the straps just like a nursing bra. I got black/grey, nude, pink, and navy blue. Getting a selection of colors assured me that I wouldn’t need to buy more in the near future and it felt so nice to match them with my different underwear. Any bra you feel comfortable in that clips between the cup and band is perfect for breastfeeding, so this is a way to avoid paying set prices for breastfeeding.

The other two bras are for breastfeeding and are more comfortable for breastfeeding around the house, but they can still be worn under clothes in public as long as I cover them up as they are thicker. The brand is Loving Moments and they cost about ten dollars each, also at Walmart. They’re designed like a sports bra, but with overlapping cups that extend to the side to free up the breast. One is gray and the other is a pink panther.

In my opinion, these are the most perfect designs. I own and have tried to maneuver the boobs out of traditional sports bras and true cup bras that connect in the middle between the breasts. I will not be wearing these anymore until we are weaned.

above the tank

Basic spaghetti strap tank tops work really well for breastfeeding because they adapt and stretch to advance your baby’s breast. If the straps aren’t adjustable, try them on to make sure they have enough stretch. You either like or don’t like a shelf built-in bra, but lace trim will only be ruined by stretching and washing.

I also purchased two Loving Moments Breastfeeding Camisoles from Walmart for $14.99 in black and grey. These clothes were perfect to wear when I don’t want to think too much about what I’m going to wear or when I know I’m going to be around people who might not be the most comfortable with breastfeeding anyway. It can be paired nicely with a blazer and jewelry. I prefer having them in my wardrobe.

Thrift tops and jackets

The reason I say thrift is because you likely need to buy quite a few pieces to make this wardrobe and you’ll have more variety than at a thrift store, especially for breastfeeding. The key to your success in finding tops for breastfeeding is that the neckline is low enough and stretches enough to release the breasts. Consider the fact that you may also be wearing a bra and a tank top underneath. All items should be stretchy enough not to constrict the breast or leave you uncomfortable. The second thing you can look for in T-shirts and jackets are buttons. Whether it’s the top-down buttons or the few buttons on top to release the breasts, it’s fine. With these two keys, you are sure to find enough cute things that can liberate breasts!

Other possibilities include wearing turtleneck sweaters or shirts, but with a tank top underneath. This way you will only lift your shirt and pull your chest up from the tank top. I loved this option because it gives me a chance to cover my breasts or wear a comfy oversized sweater and acts as a breastfeeding cover!

Another possibility is to wear medium drift/cut shirts over tank tops. I know a lot of new moms would be terrified of wearing them due to an enlarged stomach, but I was lucky enough to lose weight fairly quickly and feel comfortable wearing a half-shirt over a tank top. At least for exercise and relaxation at home, it is very easy to release breasts!

Breastfeeding necklaces

Just as wearing things to accentuate your pregnancy belly made you feel cute despite your condition, breastfeeding necklaces are another way to wear your new role with pride. At different stages of your baby’s development, you and he/she will definitely appreciate your baby wearing it too. You can shop online for specific breastfeeding necklaces, Google DIY and make your own, or shop some cute big beaded long necklaces.

Back brace

One of the staples in my wardrobe was the simple white push-up and Velcro back support. I’ve since graduated to pretty floral waist trainer corsets, but they serve the same purpose. It was almost impossible to maintain my health status caring for a baby all day and specifically breastfeeding. I really need support some days to encourage my back to stay straight when I’m really tired. It has other benefits and a scientific explanation as well, but I’ll let you do your research and decide which, if any, device will work best for you.

Black stretch mini skirt

I already had a little black stretchy skirt that kind of looked like a black tube top and it was a great addition to my breastfeeding wardrobe. I use it to wear under dresses! If I’m wearing a dress that doesn’t have a breast opening to be released, either from the side (the armhole) or the neckline, I wear a little black skirt underneath and pull my dress up to breastfeed. It wasn’t the most ideal choice and it wasn’t great for early childhood, but when your baby is trying solid foods and you may not even have to breastfeed while you’re outside, great! I wore a dress and mini skirt to Lowry’s for Thanksgiving, a restaurant 100.00 per plate, and twice during dinner managed to excuse myself to take my son to the ladies’ room where I comfortably flung my dress up to breastfeed on the couch!

Fortunately, I had an idea of what it was like to breastfeed my baby before he arrived because my sister did it before me and I was used to her personal shopping.
